Oral Surgery in Murrieta

Oral & maxillofacial surgery is a highly specialized area of dentistry. An oral surgeon must spend four extra years in a hospital residency to earn their degree. Because of their cross training with other kinds of doctors, oral surgeons can perform advanced procedures that general dentists cannot.

An oral surgeon specializes in working with the bone & soft tissue of your mouth. Their treatments range from wisdom teeth removal to facial reconstructive surgery. Oral surgery is more in-depth than your typical dental procedure, & normally requires local or general anesthesia, sedation & time for recovery. Below are a few of the services that oral surgeons provide.

Frequently asked questions

What types of procedures fall under oral surgery?

Oral surgery includes tooth extractions (including wisdom teeth), dental implant placement, bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, and treatment of oral pathologies like cysts or tumors.

Procedures are performed under local anesthesia or sedation, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. Mild to moderate discomfort afterward is common and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

Recovery depends on the procedure but usually ranges from a few days to several weeks. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and reduce complications.

As with any surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, swelling, and nerve injury. However, these are rare and can be minimized by following post-operative care guidelines.

For surgeries involving sedation or general anesthesia, it’s recommended to have a friend or family member drive you home and stay with you until you recover from the effects of sedation.
